THE FISH DANCE COLLECTION 2022 – THE IDEA
An encounter with 500 fish at a time.
When one day 500 fish knock on your door screaming that they want to do something with their lives. Our existence, known until then, may not be the same again. I never questioned that this apparition was a divine sign. My moral duty to respond to this call for help led me to turn the experience into a personal project and thus achieve salvation.
Fish and music.
After shuffling various ideas to help all those fish, I thought that the best thing would be to make all those unimaginable shapes splashed with colors dance. An opportunity to listen to music and enjoy an unforgettable afternoon contemplating all those fish-shaped drawings. The afternoon turned into four long months. Yes, four Months. In that space of time I rescued from my music collection many songs that I heard again, melodies that during some moment of my life marked my existence. Tireless rhythms that stamped a few nights and sunrises, were much less the sunsets. The state of stillness in which the fish were trapped due to the lack of music took another direction. Singing those songs again stirred some emotions. Very soon he would begin to dance, the fish too. We would all go crazy. Yes, the fish also dance and go crazy.
As a result of this meeting between fish, music and some other distortion, this collection arises inspired by my passion for music, graphic illusionism and fish that are still capable of dancing.
A dance floor for our fish.
This is the necessary argument to create the 500 different scenarios where our fish can dance. An individual space for each fish. A place where you can contour yourself in a lysergic way, an intimate space where you can translate movements into a dance that has never existed before. The dance floor that some of the most “Partygods” yearned.
The philosophy of the fish and its way of dancing.
The key to defining the ideological principle of this collection has been to individualize the figures, the music and the spaces. Legitimize a speech of introspection and away from having to show off in front of others, from looking abroad and being able to forge one’s character and greatness of spirit in private. Dancing alone and finding oneself: becoming divine. Being part of an initiation process and discovering that the deity is not an external entity and that we find it in oneself.
The dance ritual comes to an end and it is now that the dance floor slowly fades into a deep void.
And now …? The dance floor disappears.
Today I think that I have deliberately neglected some songs that should have joined that list, others were lost in the deepest oblivion and there were fewer that disappeared by magic. Many of those songs were able to make me laugh, dance, kiss and trip. Today I was dancing and I have recalled some of the moments that a few decades draw. Time outlines memories and voids that are part of our lives: we forget and neglect, we remember and often manage to evoke those past times with brilliant lucidity. During these months of work, dance and others I have been able to collect all this enormous material in continuous trips to the past. And also, in this coming and going I have been aware that «forgetting» of having neglected some songs, would also be a factor that would make up part of this collection.
A list of songs to dance to. End of the dance.
Let’s finish at the beginning. The playlist and its configuration presented the first of the challenges: selecting 500 songs from my collection of 500 different artists. A pact with the devil came in handy. An incautious way to avoid any attempt to give more importance to some artists than others and turn the list into something infinite. This meant that many other memorable songs and choruses did not enter the call. So in this way, ordering 500 songs and printing some kind of logical criteria to all this dance was much easier: artist, song and so on. An algorithm in the extensive list of songs established an alphabetical order (pure maniacal pragmatism) and the list was configured. Later, all of our fish and illustrations were embraced in a 28 hour long graphic-sonic universe.

With the alter ego of NENO PENSA I decided to create a list with the 500 songs that each of the illustrations represents. I have been able to include 487 songs of the 500 that make up the collection.
